Let’s talk about going STIR CRAZY… 🙂
After the insane schedule of my last band, having this much time off in a year felt very odd… I’m at the age where most people at my day job are counting the days until retirement or already gone… when anyone asks me, I tell them I’m already losing my mind being home 2 days a week… 7 days a week would put me over the edge… to borrow a line from M*A*S*H (to the best of my recollection), ‘people look at retirement as a permanent R&R (rest and relaxation) but after a while, you have nothing to rest up from’… well said.
The year included several Body & Soul gigs, a handful of Avant Garde Alumni Drumline and Drum Corps dates and a reunion with Woody Strobeck – the trombonist with my very first band – as I filled in with the Steel Pier Jazz Band in Shepard Park in my old home town of Lake George, NY!!
I was excited to be asked to substitute with the fabulous band Body & Soul (a subsidiary of the New York Players group)… their drummer works full time with another busy band and is often unavailable… there was even talk that he was considering making a change which would put me in line for this position permanently… that dream was gone on the first gig when I learned that the New Years Eve gig would be the band’s last… it was still a great year and I made some great new friends within the group who were thrilled with how I played and presented myself which was very reassuring to hear after the last fiasco… guess I can’t please everyone… 🙂
